Masking Matters

Halloween masks aren’t just about covering your face on October 31st, or putting the finishing touches on that party costume. There are folks who so love Halloween masks and so appreciate the creativity that went into their creation that they collect the clever and varied faces.

The Halloween masks organization has developed to create a community of folks who love and collect Halloween masks. The group and its Web site offer creative contests that are grueling and ghouling, and give Halloween memorabilia as the prizes. Here you can also learn to make your own Halloween masks, download Phantom of the Opera videos and screensavers, sing up for a magazine about Halloween masks for collectors, and purchase a scaled down version of Freddy Krueger. Members and directors of this association attend shows that display the latest Halloween masks and frightening paraphernalia and report back to the group’s members.

While the most realistic Halloween masks are generally considered to be the ones made of latex, there are other materials that work well too and cost less. The top end of Halloween masks are generally not widely used for parties and other local events. These studio masks are often created for films or for collectors who don’t mind spending a lot to get collectible-quality and unique Halloween masks.

To create these Halloween studio masks, the artist actually creates the entire statue of the creature from scratch. Then from this a mold of the face is made. This is the mold that is used for the actual latex Halloween mask. Once the mask is removed from the mold it is dyed and painted by hand. If needed, hair and eyes are added. Then the dental work comes in. Not your average Halloween masks procedure, these studio masks typically take several months to create, and occasionally more than a year.

Halloween masks can be cheap or costly, unique or mass produced, as you wish. They can be worn for celebrations or shows, or designed for display by collectors. Whatever use they’re put to, Halloween masks are great fun.
