Have you ever wonder how Halloween costumes got their start? Here’s the story.
The first Halloween was actually called Samhain, as a pagan Celtic festival in Great Britain and Ireland. Many immigrants that came to the United States and other parts of North America from Ireland and Scotland brought the Samhain, and ultimately Halloween costumes tradition with them. In the late twentieth century Halloween and its practice of costumes became part of the U.S. pop culture The most common places where Halloween is celebrated and folks don their costumes, are the United States, Canada, Ireland, the UK, Puerto Rico, Australia and New Zealand. Halloween costumes are starting to come into their own in some Western European countries as well.
Some religions, most notably Catholicism, take the meaning of Halloween from a derivation of All Hallow’s Eve, or the night before All Saints Day. This November first religious celebration is also known as All Hallows Day in some parts of the world. It wasn’t until Pope Gregory III came along, however, that All Saint’s Day moved from the original May 13th date to its present November first. Halloween and its costumers, therefore, used to be a May 12th celebration.
There was a time as well, during the ninth century when the Catholic Church had its own sort of calendar, and a day was believed to start at sunset. This mimicked the old Florentine calendar. At that time All Hallows was all one – the Halloween with its costumes and the All Hallows or All Saints Day. Now of course, Halloween is celebrated as the day before, with costumes donned that evening.
In Ireland, Halloween is referred to as Hallow Eve, with a festival of costumes and celebration known by the old name Samhain or Oiche Shamhna. Those in Scotland who speak Gaelic refer to it as Samhuin, while the Welsh call it Calan Gaeaf. Rather than Halloween costumes, the Cornish wear garb for Allantide and the Manx for Hop-tu-Naa. In Europe there are many that believe that spirits can only make contact with our physical world on Halloween when our magic is at its most potent.
